By Peggy KellySanta Paula TimesWith overcast skies seeming to rule the weekend, it’s perfect weather for curling up with a good book... a lot of good books, nay thousands of good books, all available at Saturday’s Friends of the Library Big Spring Book Sale. The sale will be held in the north parking lot of Blanchard Community Library, 119 N. 8th St. and, as always, all proceeds benefit library equipment and other needs. The Friends work all year long, carefully sorting and boxing thousands of books to ensure that the twice a year sales are successful. The success of the sale is passed on to BCL, which includes a monitoring and copying system for the bank of public access computers, supplies for the Summer Reading Program, even the kiosk outside the library for book drop-off.The 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Big Spring Book Sale is much more than books. A silent auction from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. will offer a variety of rare tomes, including several that are heavy on local interest; and there are videos and DVDs, CDs and cassettes, even games. But books rule the day, with Better Books starting at only $1, paperbacks 25 cents, hardbacks 50 cents, and the already ridiculously low prices slashed in half after 2 p.m. There are more than two dozen categories of books, ranging from fiction to non-fiction, with romance, history, politics/government, self-help, poetry, literature, biography and theater/film just a few of the favorite subjects rounding off the offerings. The Silent Auction is sure to please, with “Middle American,” the autobiography of the late Floyd Hair, a well-known area business leader and former City Councilman, signed by the author.
“Memories Are Magic,” published by the Saticoy Historical Society in 1979, has notes on early Saticoy - Santa Paula’s neighbor to the West - and photos with illustrations by the artist, Arte Duval Donlon.Santa Paula’s own Judy Triem, the notable historian, wrote “Ventura County: Land of Good Fortune.” Considered the definitive history of the area, it includes numerous historical photographs and was published in 1985.Lafe and Dora Todd were Ventura County pioneers whose story is told in “Most Gentle Wilderness,” written by Linda McReady, the couple’s great-granddaughter.Of more general interest are “Franklin Booth: 60 Reproductions from Original Drawings” published in 1925; “Agriculture at the Golden Gate International Exposition Treasure Island 1939-1940” published by the California Printing Office; John Muir’s extensively illustrated “West of the Rocky Mountains,” a 1976 reprint; “A London Reverie: Fifty-Six Drawings by Joseph Pennell,” a 1937 first American printing of the black and white depictions of 1900s London; and “Modern Japanese Prints: An Art Reborn,” a classic work on modern Japanese prints.Other books will also be featured in the Silent Auction on the special table where visitors can examine what’s up for bid.
