By Peggy KellySanta Paula TimesNational Public Works Week celebrating the “Heart of Every Community” was recognized by the City Council at the May 15 meeting, where they learned that the city was also celebrating the 10-year acquisition of the water enterprise.Vice Mayor Ray Luna presented the National Public Works Week proclamation to Public Works Director/City Engineer Cliff Finley. Luna noted that public works services provided in the community are an “Integral part of our citizens’ everyday lives,” and that the support of an “understanding and informed citizenry is vital to the operations of public work systems and programs.”Public Works includes water, sewers, streets, public building and vehicle maintenance and solid waste collection, as well as 24-hour emergency response during heavy winter rains and other emergencies, noted Luna. “The health, safety and comfort of this community greatly depends on these facilities and services, and the quality and effectiveness of these facilities, as well as their planning, design and construction, is vitally dependent upon the efforts and skills of public works officials.”
The attitude and understanding of the work performed by Public Works materially influences the efficiency of the qualified and dedicated personnel who staff the department, noted Luna. All citizens and civic organizations should acquaint themselves with the issues involved in providing “our public works, and to recognize the contributions which public works officials make everyday to our health, safety, comfort and quality of life.”Finley thanked the Council and introduced Rob Howard before he apologized for more Public Works personnel being unable to attend the meeting. “This week they’re getting up at 4:30 a.m. to steam clean” downtown sidewalks, noted Finley.City Manager Wally Bobkiewicz noted that the celebration also included the city’s 1996 acquisition of the then-Santa Paula Waterworks, a function that is now “an important part of the Public Works Department.”
