Frank Ramos Chavez Frank Ramos Chavez, 74, passed away on Thursday, July 13, 2006 in Santa Paula after a lengthy illness.Frank was born on February 24, 1932 at El Rancho La Campana in Fillmore, but was raised in Santa Paula for most of his life. He was a contractor in the plastering business.Frank graduated from Santa Paula High School and enlisted in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean conflict, having served in Newfoundland. Frank was a chef in the service, and continued his interest in food preparation throughout his life. His main interests were his five grandsons, who were the love of his life.Preceding Frank in death were his mother Rose Chavez, his father Macedonio Chavez, and his brothers, David and Edward, who was killed in Vietnam.His survivors include his wife Ramona Chavez; his sons, David Lee (wife Myra) Chavez and William Thomas (wife Esperanza) Chavez; his grandchildren, David from Bakersfield, Anthony, Vincent, Frank and John, all of Santa Paula; and his brother Victor (wife Rita) Chavez, and sister Delfina (husband Fred), all of Santa Paula. Frank also leaves numerous nieces and nephews.A visitation will be Wednesday, July 19 from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Funeraria del ángel Stetler Mortuary. Rosary and Mass will be celebrated together by Father Charles Lueras, CRIC, on Thursday, July 20 at 9 a.m. at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church at 427 N. Oak St., with burial to immediately follow at Santa Paula Cemetery.Arrangements are under the direction of Funeraria del ángel Stetler Mortuary, 128 S. 8th St., Santa Paula, 525-5595.Hortensia “Tencha” M. ValdezHortensia Valdez, 84, born on December 17, 1921, passed away at her residence in her home town of Santa Paula on Thursday, July 13, 2006.She was a homemaker her entire life and enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, gardening, and crocheting. She was a parishioner of St. Sebastian Church. She devoted much of her time to her family and friends, especially caring for her special needs daughter Dolores for 32 years. She was a great cook and baker, and loved See’s Candy and Diet Pepsi.Hortensia has joined her loving husband of 51 years, Daniel Valdez Sr., and her daughter Dolores. She was also preceded in death by her brothers Joe T. Martinez and Ermundo T. Martinez.
Mrs. Valdez leaves behind her son, Daniel Valdez II, grandchildren Baylee and Jacob Valdez, brother Alfonso Martinez, sister-in-law Chita Martinez, and many other beloved cousins, nieces, nephews, friends, and turtle “Speedy.”Rosary was scheduled for Tuesday, July 18 at 7 p.m. at Skillin-Carroll Mortuary. Funeral mass will be on Wednesday, July 19 at 10 a.m. at St. Sebastian Church, with burial following at Pierce Brothers Santa Paula Cemetery.Arrangements are under the direction of Skillin Carroll Mortuary, 525-3391.Aurelia ‘Ted’ BalkwillAurelia ‘Ted’ Balkwill, formerly of Santa Paula, passed quietly to rest on the evening of July 10th, 2006. Aunt Ted was born in Los Angeles, California and lived a long and active life. Her age remains a secret (at her request) to this day. She married her true love Eric in 1934 and gave him a son, Gary, in 1940. She was involved in many local clubs and organizations, and was a longtime member of the Eastern Star. Ted’s life long friend Betty Dudley says she “laughed easily, and was loved by all”. She was preceded in death by Eric in 1972 and Gary followed his father in 2002.We were blessed with Aunt Ted in 2002 when she relocated to the Santa Maria area, and the gift of her love and laughter is one we will carry forever in our hearts. She is survived by her Sister-in-Law Laura M. Fowler of Santa Barbara, Ca; a niece Karen (Doug) Moulder of Santa Maria, Ca. and 3 nephews, Steve (Sherrie) Fowler of Colorado Springs, Co.; Mark (Cathy) Fowler of Seaford, Va.; and Jim (Karol) Fowler also of Santa Maria, Ca. A graveside service was held on Monday, July 17, 2006, at 1:30 p.m., in the Santa Barbara Cemetery in Santa Barbara, Ca.Arrangements are in the care of Magner-Maloney Funeral Home in Santa Maria.
