A former Santa Paula Police Officer shot in an encounter with Los Angeles area gang members testified in the case last week about the attack that left his partner killed.

By Peggy KellySanta Paula TimesA former Santa Paula Police Officer shot in an encounter with Los Angeles area gang members testified in the case last week about the attack that left his partner killed.Burbank Officer Gregory Campbell, who was a SPPD Officer for about five years until the late 1980s, told the jury about the hail of gunfire that erupted in a parking lot in November 2003 after he and his partner approached members of the Vineland Boys gang.Nine alleged members or associates of the Sun Valley street gang are on trial for federal racketeering changes although none are facing charges related to the death of Burbank Officer David Pavelka, 26 of Simi Valley, who was shot 14 times.One of the suspects was also killed in the exchange of gunfire.Members of the Vineland Boys - which also operated in parts of Burbank and North Hollywood - fired on the officers after Campbell noticed that a black Cadillac Escalade parked at the Ramada Inn had no license plates.When Pavelka arrived on scene and exited his patrol vehicle Ramon Aranda opened fire on the officers.
Campbell was shot twice; one bullet damaged his spinal cord and left him deaf in one ear.Aranda was also killed in the gunfight but the second suspect, David Garcia, fled the scene. Garcia is not targeted by the federal prosecution but still faces state murder and attempted murder charges.The federal indictment of the Vineland Boys lists 78-counts ranging from violations under the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) Act, narcotics trafficking, money laundering and firearms.Prosecutors told the jury that the members of a high school football team formed the Vineland Boys gang in the 1980s.Campbell, 43, who had been a Senior Officer with the SPPD and was the recipient of a Ventura County Police Officers Association Medal of Valor, is now a Detective with the Burbank Police Department.Campbell is the second former SPPD officer to be wounded in the line of duty.
