SPPOA recognizes SPPD Officer, Dispatcher and Reserve of the Year

The Santa Paula Police Officers Association (SPPOA) handed out honors at the organization’s recent awards ceremony recognizing the 2006 Officer of the Year, Dispatcher of the Year and Reserve Officer of the Year, according to a Santa Paula Police Department spokesman.

Officer of the Year Paul Spencer, Dispatcher of the Year Jessica Gomez and Reserve Officer of the Year David Curran were selected for the top department honors by the Santa Paula Police Officers Association based on nominations by their peers, said Senior Officer Ryan Smith.The awards dinner was held at the Ventura Beach Marriott, where “Everyone was happy and had a great time,” said Senior Officer Smith. “It was wonderful to get together with our fellow employees and celebrate.”Officer Spencer, an eight-year SPPD veteran, was honored for his “dedicated work within the department” and his widely recognized expertise in narcotics enforcement. “Officer Spencer is a great part of the Santa Paula Police Department team” and is held in high regard by his peers and support staff, said Senior Officer Smith.
Dispatcher of the Year Gomez joined the SPPD about a year ago, and “She earned the award for the dedicated job she’s been doing... Jessica is always available for major incidents and will come in without hesitation when we’ve had major crime scenes” requiring dispatch support. “We absolutely appreciate her efforts... we have to, they’re a lifeline,” Senior Officer Smith noted.Reserve Officer of the Year Curran has spent “countless volunteer hours, coming in all hours of the day and night to assist officers with investigations as well as ordinary tasks,” including transporting prisoners to the main Ventura County Jail. “His endless commitment for volunteering for community functions” is also notable, said Senior Officer Smith. “We’re all very impressed with what he does.”Each of the honorees received plaques from the Santa Paula Police Officers Association and words of recognition from Police Chief Steve MacKinnon.Senior Officer Smith, who was the master of ceremonies for the awards dinner, said that the SPPOA includes full-time officers and other public safety employees in the SPPD. Throughout the year the SPPOA - led by President Officer Spencer, who replaced newly promoted Lieutenant Carlos Juarez - supports numerous programs and projects in Santa Paula through volunteerism and financial support.
