The local blood supply, following the July 4th holiday, has again dropped to critical levels for some blood types, and is seriously low for others. In spite of a strong response by donors in the days leading up to the holiday, donations have been below the amount needed for the last two weeks. In an effort to gain donor attention, the blood bank is launching its summer Pint for Pint campaign this week. Through August 11, all volunteer blood donors will receive a certificate for a free pint of ice cream as a summertime thank you from United Blood Services.Donating blood can come with some sweet rewards, the most important of which is saving a life. When it comes to giving blood every pint counts, as each can mean another life saved.Unfortunately, if current summer 2007 trends don’t improve, the Central Coast is at risk of not having enough pints on the shelves at United Blood Services to meet the summer need. During all of the summer fun, with fairs, festivals and vacations, the numbers of donors have been insufficient to maintain a steady and adequate supply.
About 270 people each day must roll up their sleeves here on the Central Coast, and that just hasn’t been the case in recent weeks. With blood in short supply, United Blood Services is appealing to the public to make the time to donate, soon! Supplies won’t last without the public’s support. The need is so great that Marble Slab is thanking Ventura County volunteer blood donors with a certificate for a pint of Super Premium Ice Cream, through August 11. Saving a life does come with sweet rewards. Take the time to donate blood soon; it will be an hour well spent. If you are over age 17 and weigh at least 110 pounds, you can likely donate. Donors are asked to make an appointment by contacting United Blood Services online at www.unitedbloodservices.org/centralcoast or www.bloodhero.com, or calling a United Blood Services Center in Ventura, Thousand Oaks or Camarillo toll-free at (800) 715-3899.Donations may be made Monday through Friday at UBS Centers in Ventura at 1756 Eastman at the corner of Market, in Camarillo (open Monday and Wednesday from 1 to 7 p.m.) at 2105 Pickwick across from the post office, and in Thousand Oaks (open Tuesday and Thursday from 1 to 7 p.m.) in the North Star Plaza at 1321 Thousand Oaks Blvd. near Roxy’s Deli. There are also a number of drives happening throughout the region. Appointments are appreciated, but not necessary. Walk-ins are also welcome.
