By Peggy KellySanta Paula TimesVic Glazener first joined Santa Paula Kiwanis in 1964, and 43 years later he was honored with the club’s highest district honor during the recent installation of President Ken Stock at a luncheon held September 23 at The Grove at the Glen Tavern Inn. Glazener was named to the prestigious William A. Dunlop Fellowship, established by the Kiwanis California/Nevada/Hawaii Foundation more than 20 years ago to honor its devoted first president.Roger Strange surprised Glazener with the award, noting, “There are some who get involved in service organizations and clubs for social interactions,” while others, such as Glazener, serve to work and be involved in bettering the community. “This Kiwanian is not afraid to give his opinion, and he has remained active for 43 years and is a past president... he has attended probably 2,150 meetings!”Glazener has participated in almost every major club activity, notably the annual Kiwanis Citrus Parade & Festival, as Club president and vice president, and multiple terms as secretary and Board director, the latter a position he continues to hold. His knowledge of club tradition and experience in the Santa Paula Kiwanis Club has proven invaluable to newer and present members. In addition, Glazener is the creator and editor of The Citrus Capital View, the Santa Paula Kiwanis Club’s bi-monthly newsletter.
Strange said that the club had donated $1,000 to the William A. Dunlop Fellowship in Glazener’s name, making him the 1,353rd Kiwanian to be a recipient of the highest honor. Glazener received the official pin, plaque and medallion of the fellowship. Past Lt. Governor Mike Wesner noted that half of the donation would fund pediatric trauma training for physicians and nurses.“I’m speechless,” said the outspoken Glazener, to the delight of the Kiwanians. “Once a Kiwanian always a Kiwanian,” he added. Strange said that Glazener can wear his William A. Dunlop pin and medallion to official Kiwanis functions and conferences.“We had to try to keep it a secret,” said Glazener’s wife, Jane. His daughter Vicki Entrekin and her husband Ronald were in on the secret: “We’re so proud... Dad’s been really devoted to Kiwanis for many years.”The California/Nevada/Hawaii Foundation was organized in 1965 - a year after Glazener joined the Santa Paula Kiwanis Club - when then-District Governor Dunlap responded to the Klamath River flood disaster by spearheading the institution as a means to provide relief funds and financial aid throughout the district. The Dunlap Fellowship was founded in 1985 to honor the Foundation’s founding director. Five percent of the donation is designated for the foundation’s unrestricted fund, 50 percent benefits a donor-selected foundation program, and the balance is permanently restricted and only interest used to support foundation programs.
