VCTC honors local businesses at 2008 Rideshare Diamond Awards

Five Ventura County employers were among the dozens of Southern California businesses and individuals honored for outstanding efforts to promote ridesharing, reduce traffic congestion and air pollution at the tenth annual Diamond Awards, held May 21 in downtown Los Angeles.

Five Ventura County employers were among the dozens of Southern California businesses and individuals honored for outstanding efforts to promote ridesharing, reduce traffic congestion and air pollution at the tenth annual Diamond Awards, held May 21 in downtown Los Angeles.“The Diamond Awards recognize businesses and individuals who go the extra mile to find solutions to traffic congestion,” said Alan Holmes, Rideshare programs manager with the Ventura County Transportation Commission (VCTC), which sponsors the event along with Metro Commute Services. “They’re proof positive that when it comes to getting to work in Southern California, it doesn’t have to be one person per car. These are alternatives that make the commute better for everyone.”Ventura County winners taking home Diamond Awards were the City of Thousand Oaks, California Lutheran University, Bend-Pak, Inc. of Santa Paula, Patagonia in Ventura, and Cherylanne Dooley at California State University, Channel Islands.
Dozens of work sites in Ventura County currently offer rideshare programs, which offer benefits and strategies to promote alternatives to driving alone to work. Typical programs include carpooling and transit, as well as promotion of alternatives such as bicycling or walking to work.VCTC works in partnership with businesses and commuters throughout the county to promote ridesharing, and it runs the county’s highly successful Guaranteed Ride Home program, which offers free rides home to ridesharers who miss their usual ride home due to an emergency or unexpected overtime.
