Ventura Superior Court elects Presiding and Assistant Presiding Judges for 2009 and 2010

The Judges of the Ventura Superior Court have elected Judge Kevin J. McGee as Presiding Judge and Judge Vincent J. O’Neill Jr. as Assisting Presiding Judge for 2009 and 2010.

The Judges of the Ventura Superior Court have elected Judge Kevin J. McGee as Presiding Judge and Judge Vincent J. O’Neill Jr. as Assisting Presiding Judge for 2009 and 2010. The election was held during the judges’ monthly meeting on August 27. The new term for both begins January 1, 2009.Judge McGee has served as a Ventura Superior Court judge for almost 10 years. He has been the Superior Court Assistant Presiding Judge since January 2007, and is currently the Supervising Judge of the Criminal Division. Past assignments have included family law, civil, criminal trials and criminal arraignments.Judge McGee was elected to the Ventura Superior Court bench in November 1998. Prior to that he was a member of the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office for 16 years. He served as Chief Assistant District Attorney, that agency’s second highest position, from 1994-1998. Before joining the District Attorney’s Office, he was in private practice for two and a half years working in the insurance defense field.Judge McGee graduated with honors from the Loyola Law School in 1979 (cum laude), and Loyola Marymount University in 1976 (magna cum laude). He has served on many professional and community organizations.Judge O’Neill was appointed to the Ventura Municipal Court by Governor Pete Wilson in 1992, and elevated to the Superior Court bench three years later. He has been a judge for 16 years.
Judge O’Neill is presently the Supervising Judge of the Civil Division and is a former Presiding Judge of the Appellate Division. Past assignments have included appeals, civil trials and criminal trials.Prior to his appointment to the bench, Judge O’Neill was a member of the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office for 13 years, eight of which were in the position of Chief Deputy District Attorney. Before that, he was a Deputy Attorney General for two years in the Los Angeles criminal division.Judge O’Neill earned his bachelor’s degree at Loyola Marymount University and his Juris Doctorate from the UCLA School of Law. He has taught numerous statewide judicial education courses and is an adjunct professor at the Ventura College of Law. He has been active in many professional and community activities, and is the publisher of O’Neill’s California Confessions Law.The Presiding Judge, with the assistance of the Court Executive Officer, is responsible for leading the court, establishing policies, and allocating resources in a manner that promotes equal access to justice, maximizes the use of judicial and other resources, increases efficiency in court operations, and enhances service to the public.The Assistant Presiding Judge performs duties as assigned by the Presiding Judge and, in the absence of the Presiding Judge, exercises the powers of the Presiding Judge.
