By Peggy KellySanta Paula TimesSanta Paulans love sprucing up the Citrus Capital of the World, and the annual beautification event, a favorite of volunteers, will be held Saturday. Interim Public Works Direct Jon Turner told the City Council at the October 6 meeting that Santa Paula Beautiful will be held Saturday, October 18 from 8 a.m. to noon.“Yes, it’s that time of the year again,” said Turner, who described Santa Paula Beautiful as “the event where we basically go out and identify areas of town that can use some sprucing up.” Volunteers - at times entire families of those wishing to beautify the city - donate their time and labor, while businesses donate funds and/or supplies for the effort that includes litter and debris removal.Turner said 31 sites have been identified, including Five Points, where Peck and West Telegraph roads and West Harvard Boulevard meet, and where it is anticipated there will be “a lot of activity.... We’re doing a planting part to beautify the two corners there,” the western entry to the city from Highway 126 and West Telegraph Road.
Turner noted a variety of area businesses remain committed to the effort, and that new business supporters are also being utilized, including the services of an arborist to “trim up areas in town probably a little more involved than our volunteers can do.”Volunteers are asked to meet at the Railroad Plaza Gazebo - located at North Mill and Santa Barbara streets - at 8 a.m. and to bring any items - including work gloves, rakes, etc. - they believe will help in the cleanup effort. At the Gazebo, Turner said cleanup teams will be formed before they “head out to specific areas” identified as recipients of the beautification effort.Participants will receive a free Santa Paula Beautiful T-shirt and be treated to a barbeque lunch at the Gazebo starting at noon. Turner said that those requiring more information are asked to call Public Works’ Lucy Blanco Ramirez at 933-4212, ext 305.
