Second campaign reporting shows Robinson retaining fundraising lead

City Council candidate Fred Robinson is leading the field in campaign donations, according to the second - and last - financial statement before the November 4 Presidential Election.

The third candidate is Jennifer Matos, a CSUN professor who is running an independent campaign. The three are vying to replace Councilmen Ray Luna and John Procter, who have opted not to run for third terms.Council members receive $300 a month, a small annual expense account, and more than $900 monthly that can be applied toward membership in the city’s “cafeteria” health plan or just pocketed.Robinson was unsuccessful in his first bid for the Council two years ago. Tovias and Matos, the latter who served two terms as a city planning commissioner and is the elected president of the CSUN faculty, are involved in their race for elected municipal office.For the reporting period of October 1 through October 18 Robinson reported receiving donations of $2,119, bringing his contribution total to $12,131. Of the amount received this period, Robinson reported $684 was collected through donations of less than $100 each.
Notable monetary donors in the latest filing period include $250 each from Myron Harrison of E.J. Harrison & Sons and James Harrison, also of the same company. Robinson’s Campaign Manager Orval Garrison donated $425, bringing his total donations to $1,025. Campaign Treasurer Sharon Robinson reported her husband spent $1,651 during the reporting period, leaving a campaign balance of $1,852.28.Tovias’ Campaign Treasurer Josephina Richey reported filing period contributions of $2,281, bringing the total to $10,061.50. A notable donation to Tovias’ campaign was $500 from David Mitchell, a Camarillo-based CPA. Other listed donors gave an additional $450 total.Tovias’ listing has no figures for campaign contributions of less than $100. Tovias’ campaign account is listed as having a zero balance after expenditures of $3,634.10 that occurred during the filing period.Matos collected $3,918 - much of it from labor unions - during the latest reporting period, bringing her total to $9,163. Carpenter Local Union #150, Plumbers Local Union No. 78 and Journey & Apprentices of the Pipe Fitting Industry #582 each donated $1,000 to Matos’ campaign, while Plumbers & Pipefitters Local 364 contributed $500.Matos’ campaign treasurer Joanne Guilin reported $318 was collected during the filing period from donors contributing less than $100 each. Expenditures made during the filing period by Matos’ campaign were reported at $1,283, leaving her with a balance of $7,880.Council candidates are required to file more financial statements, but the documents won’t be due until after the election.
