The Cardinal varsity basketball team found the defense of ST. Francis hard to break as they lost the CIF Division IV first round game to St. Francis of the Mission League, 57-41. The Cards out shot the Golden Knights in both the first and third quarters, but had a tough time hitting the net the other two quarters. Turnovers hurt the Santa Paula offense in much of the game. The Cards were led in scoring by seniors Anthony Del Rio with 13 and Antonio Rios with 6 points. Rios fouled out with 4:20 left on the clock. Also scoring for Santa Paula were: Eduardo Jimenez 6, Andrew Huizar 5, Andrew Jimenez 4, Alfredo Cordova 4, Jose Torres 2 and Jorge Cancino with 1.Santa Paula went into the game with a 9-17 overall record and 8-2 in Frontier League play, giving them second place.Coach David Urias said his boys played well the last few weeks and they never quit, no matter how hard the contest.
As for the CIF game, Urias said they got a little broken down in the second quarter, but played well in the third to catch up. “They wore us down at the end,” he said. “We didn’t capitalize on opportunities and that hurt us. We missed too many inside shots in the last two quarters. I would stack my guys up against anybody. We don’t get much respect out of town, but I tell the guys to play as hard as we can.”
