The Cardinal baseball team, 13-0 at home, lost their CIF Division VI semifinal game to Oxford Academy Tuesday, 2-0. The Santa Paula team, which had already surpassed any Cardinal team in recent history, had hoped to play in the Division championship game today. Oxford Academy was unbeaten on the road and their strong pitching and defense proved to be the difference. Cardinal pitcher Albert Carrillo also pitched an excellent game, allowing only eight hits and two runs. This final game left the Cards with a 22-8 overall record.Carrillo hit two ground-ruled doubles in the game and catcher Allen Gwynn hit a double with two out, but the Cardinals couldn’t come up with the hits they needed to score.Head Coach Gabe Diaz said he was disappointed, but not in the kids. “They deserved to win, especially since we had no runs on the board,” Diaz said. “We battled and hung in there but we didn’t capitalized.” He added that he was proud of the kids.
Diaz and his staff have been chosen to coach the West All Star team. They’ll start practice next week. The East-West game is slated for June 14 at Amgen Field, located at Conejo Creek South Park on Janss Road at the northbound 23 Freeway exit.
