The East All-Stars came alive after three innings and went on to beat the West All-Stars 6-3 in a Sunday baseball game at Conejo Creek Ballpark. Santa Paula’s Gabe Diaz, who led the Cardinals to the CIF semifinals this season, coached the West squad. Allen Gwynn started on the mound for the West. He struck out the first six batters he faced. Gwynn also slammed a two-run homer for the West. Santa Paula’s Albert Carrillo pitched the bottom of the eighth inning with Gwynn behind the plate. Carrillo and Gwynn were the dynamic duo for the Cardinals all season long, trading off between pitching and catching. Cardinal Matt Phillips was the other Santa Paula player to make the team. He got a couple of innings in the outfield.Diaz had 25 players to choose from and made 29 lineup changes during the game. “I wanted to get everybody in,” Diaz said. “It was rough” Diaz added that it was a great experience. The last All-Star game he saw was in 1988, when he played for the West team.
