By Peggy KellySanta Paula TimesAndrea Landeros, a Briggs School 8th grade student, thinks people friendly energy smart is the only way to live, and her depiction of a planned community is now sporting the cover of the Ventura County Transportation Commission and Air Pollution Control District’s 2001 calendar.“2001 Ways to Go” is the title of Landeros colorful drawing showing a town with every convenience - living, shopping, eating, working and education - readily at hand. There’s even a Metrolink train, airplanes and a helicopter, probably due to influences of same in the Santa Clara River Valley and their proximity to Briggs School. Landeros shows many other forms of alternative transportation in her calendar cover drawing; those inside the 2001 calendar are from students as young as kindergarten to high schoolers. This is the eighth joint calendar sponsored by the Ventura County Transportation Commission and county Air Pollution Control District, which contains original drawings by county students who entered the art competition. The entrants, through art, had to show alternative forms of transportation - or in Landeros’ case, even living - to cut down on automobile commuting, especially those who drive alone instead of trying to fill their vehicles with other commuters.
The theme of this year’s competition was “2001 Ways to Go” and winning entries came from public and private school students across Ventura County. The calendar is used to raise public awareness about the environment: it notes that motor vehicles account for half the air pollution in Ventura County and alternative ways of traveling, including “telecommuting” instead of actually driving to work when possible.Take a hint from “2001 Ways to Go” and help improve the environment include carpooling, bicycling, walking, biking, hopping a bus or the Metrolink train.
