By Peggy KellySanta Paula TimesEducation and its impacts on the future of Santa Paula’s kids was celebrated at the annual Rotary Club’s New Teachers’ BBQ, held at the Wilson Ranch. The annual event included socializing, musical entertainment by Xavier “Big X” Montes, and a Rotary BBQ Team dinner.Teachers had an earlier treat when they were given a tour of the city riding on the Limoneira Company vintage trolley, and later they were given gift bags holding the bounty of the area, and information on local attractions.Rotary President Pam Lindsay thanked hosts Chris and Yvonne Wilson for again hosting the event, meant to welcome new teachers and express appreciation for their devotion to education. Rotary has welcomed many teachers over the years to “let you know how important you are to our community,” Lindsay said.
A brief history of Santa Paula Rotary was presented, and Lindsay noted that Rotarian Chris Wilson’s grandfather was a club founder in 1923.“Rotary has supported education since the club’s inception” through various programs, including Jr. Achievement and the annual scholarships given to graduating high school seniors. “Our motto is ‘Service Above Self’... and it’s difficult to find a program in the community Rotary doesn’t have a finger in.”Trustees from the Santa Paula High School District also attended the event welcoming teachers from all schools in the area’s five districts. A school or district administrator who spoke of the new educator’s background and special interests, as well as life experiences that would benefit their students, introduced each teacher. Dr. David Gomez, the superintendent of the Santa Paula Union High School District, said one of the new teachers had been his student when he was a 3rd grade bilingual teacher.More than one school district representative thanked Rotary for their devotion to education and the community.
