Community activist Ginger Gherardi has been selected the 2009 Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year and the Santa Paula Times 2009 Business of the Year, according to Chamber Membership Services Director Barbara Kroon. The Railroad Plaza, with the renovation of the historic Mill building and the Depot, was selected the Beautification Project of the Year. Kroon said the Chamber Executive Committee made the selections based on nominations.

“Ginger,” said Chamber Board President Sam Hishmeh, “has always been an outstanding citizen, both on the county and local level. She is truly dedicated to Santa Paula.”

A longtime member and past president of the Santa Paula Rotary Club “is no stranger to volunteerism,” said Kroon. “As the former executive director of the Ventura County Transportation Commission, Ginger was known far and wide for spearheading projects with every intention of positive results. Combine these two qualities and you’ve got the makings of a very effective person when it comes to improving our town.” Kroon said Gherardi “has led the charge to restore the Depot Plaza, fund the Santa Paula Art Museum and revive our 4th of July Fireworks show, just to name a few of her numerous accomplishments.”

Business of the Year, the Santa Paula Times, is owned and operated by Debbie and Don Johnson. The Johnsons and newspaper staff “have been a cohesive force in our beautiful community for many years,” first with the Santa Paula Chronicle and then with the Santa Paula Times, which they founded in the early 1990s when the former was closed abruptly by its corporate owners. Kroon said, “Not a civic, sporting, school, charity or community event goes by without the diligent coverage and support of the Santa Paula Times.”

Hishmeh said the Santa Paula Times has “come to be our trusted local paper, bringing us news that affects our daily lives. The devotion of the Johnsons to keeping Santa Paula aware of what is occurring in their own town is truly appreciated.”

The Railroad Plaza was selected Beautification Project of the Year for both its Mill building, which will soon house the Ventura County Farm Heritage Museum, and the train Depot, which holds Chamber offices as well as the Santa Paula Society of the Arts Depot Gallery and Gift Shop. Kroon said the Ventura County Transportation Commission - then led by Gherardi - was able to secure approximately $2.4 million in grants to restore “this historic area, which once served as the hub of activity in Santa Paula. Now, once again these lovely buildings will serve a special purpose, augmenting our rich tourism offerings.”

The Citizen, Business and Beautification Project of the Year will be recognized at the Chamber of Commerce Annual Mayor’s Address and Awards Luncheon on Tuesday, February 2nd at noon at the Railroad Plaza.

“Special thanks to all of you who took the time to write and submit your nominations for these prestigious awards,” said Kroon. “The Railroad Plaza, Santa Paula Times and Ginger Gherardi are all local treasures that we at the Chamber of Commerce are truly grateful to have in our community.”
