A unique way to celebrate Santa Paula’s gala Centennial and show artistic pride in the city is being offered by noted artist Laura Staben: how about creating a centennial-themed artistic tote bag?

There isn’t anyone in Santa Paula who teaches tole and decorative painting.”Tole is the beginning term meaning painting on tin: “Since we don’t do that much on tin anymore it’s called tole and decorative painting,” applied to a variety of materials.
Staben recently started to apply her talent to more conventional painting on canvas, attending a six-day seminar.Tole and decorative painting is normally done from a pattern but Staben found that creating a painting on canvas is not a full pattern, although there are format guidelines - the line of the horizon, etc. - that are followed. And, she noted, “a lot of freehand drawing” is also incorporated into tole and decorative painting; in fact, the centennial tote bags will also be decorated with freehand leaves and flowers. As for Staben, freehand “Roses, roses are my forte. . .I love to do roses; I can practically do them in my sleep.”Staben, a tole and decorative painter for “about 20 years off and on,” is a member - along with five other Santa Paulans - of the National Society of Tole & Decorative Painters through the Ventura County Poinsettia Painters, which meets regularly in Camarillo. The Presbyterian Church will be offering several activities related to the centennial, said Staben, “all sorts of fantastic things going on that we’re adding on to.” The church will also sell pie and soda pop during the weekend-long Centennial Celebration (April 19-21) at Veterans Park.Anyone who is interested in the class can call Staben at 525-3437. Enrollment is limited and filling up fast, but “I’ll see if there are any openings; I have the supplies for 20 people and the class is just about filled, but I may be able to make room for others.”
