SP man shot in the back near Ebell Park after confrontation with woman

A Santa Paula woman was arrested Monday on a parole violation after the shooting of a local man in the back near Ebell Park. The victim later refused treatment and walked out of the hospital with the bullet still lodged in his back.

The victim later refused treatment and walked out of the hospital with the bullet still lodged in his back.SPPD Sgt. Gary Marshall said the incident occurred at about 11:12 a.m. on April 22, near the corner of Main and 7th streets.According to a witness, Joseph McMullen, 29 of Santa Paula, was having a verbal confrontation with with 32-year-old Christina Guzman, also a Santa Paula resident.“A witness heard a woman yelling at McMullen,” who tussled with the woman during the altercation, said Sgt. Marshall.
While standing over Guzman, McMullen was approached from behind by a subject holding a gun.“The suspect walked up behind McMullen and fired the gun into his back at close range,” of about 6 inches away from the victim. The suspect then fled the area on foot.McMullen was treated on scene by Santa Paula Fire Department EMTs and ambulance paramedics before being transported to Santa Paula Memorial Hospital’s Emergency Room. McMullen refused treatment and left the hospital although he still has the bullet lodged in his back, reportedly in close proximity to his spinal cord.Arlene Duran, 24 of Santa Paula, a friend of Guzman’s, was later arrested on a parole violation.The investigation into the shooting, one of several such incidents in recent weeks, is continuing.
