McCalister Family donates van to Hospice of Santa Clara Valley

Raymond McCalister Sr. and his family decided that the best way to memorialize his late wife, Laura, was to help others. And now, Hospice of Santa Clara Valley has a van that the McCalister family donated to the non-profit group.

And now, Hospice of Santa Clara Valley has a van that the McCalister family donated to the non-profit group.“It was just wonderful of Ray and the McCalister family to make this significant donation that will be used to transport Hospice clients,” to appointments, said Hospice Board of Directors President Cathy Barringer.McCalister, a second-generation Santa Paulan, and Laura were married for more than 50 years at the time of her death on March 15th.Laura Riden McCalister had a colorful life, but is remembered most as a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.“After reading the Hospice Wish List in their April newsletter, we decided that such a donation would be a wonderful way to pay homage to such a caring and giving woman,” said Raymond McCalister Sr.
The van is a 1989 Ford E150 XL model specially equipped for the handicapped.Hospice of Santa Clara Valley has provided emotional, social and spiritual support to persons with life-limiting illnesses and their families for over two decades.Hospice, headquartered in Santa Paula at the First United Methodist Church on North Mill Street, has a small paid staff but an army of volunteers.Hospice services are free to its clients, and programs now include Phone Buddies, Casserole and Sewing services.Hospice of Santa Clara Valley serves Santa Paula, Fillmore and Piru and has a lending library of videos, cassette tapes and books, and sponsors numerous support groups as well as counseling. In addition, sick room equipment is also lent out free of charge.Hospice sponsors annual fundraising Home and Garden tours as well as Light Up A Life, a community holiday event that has become a tradition.For more information about Hospice and its in-home support services as well as other Hospice programs and volunteer opportunities, call 525-1333.
