By Peggy KellySanta Paula Times“It’s one of the last times I’ll wear the Stetson,” said Ken Stock, as the Kiwanis Club of Santa Paula welcomed new President Bill Mensing and bid farewell to outgoing President Stock at a special installation dinner held at Logsdon’s at the Airport.Stock noted that he and other Kiwanis Club presidents were the “posse” reflecting the 2001-2002 theme of Kiwanis International.Special guests at the installation dinner were Lt. Gov. Bruce Byers and Lt. Gov. Designate Orlene Bowers.Women were admitted to Kiwanis starting in 1984, said Stock, and “women have been a great asset to our Santa Paula Club,” which saw a boost in membership during the year.“We’re here to bury Cesar, not praise him,” quipped Byers. “Although we bury Ken as president, he will be resurrected,” as the past president, allowing him to give “opinions, but not have a lot of responsibility.”Byers noted that “We really don’t need Kiwanis members, we need Kiwanians,” with a true desire to help others, especially children.
Byers told his own experience in realizing what a Kiwanian is, “becoming a better member with a strong commitment and the desire to do more,” to help others as he assisted at a Special Olympics event.Byers noted that the Santa Paula Kiwanis Club has served the community for over 50 years. And future 50-year members must be recruited now, and “. . .the younger and poorer,” must not be overlooked, as not all who would like to serve their communities can afford club financial obligations.“I want the Santa Paula Kiwanis Club to continue another 50 years, doing the phenomenal job it does for the community. A job well-done, a community well-served.”Byers noted that the club assisted an area student with medical expenses, and “God bless you. . .you also give toys to kids at Christmas, and can remember the hundreds of hours of joy a child can derive from one toy. Really President Stock, a job well done, I’m really proud of the Santa Paula club and the job you’re done. There’s no question in my mind all you have done for our kids; forever after you will be a model for others.”Bowers did the honors installing the Board of Directors, David Luna, Bill Grant, Enrique Cornejo, Vic Glazener, Gene Marzec, Dan Robles and Sheryl Misehimer.President Mensing and Club Officers were installed by Byers, and include President-Elect Gary Prentiss, Second Vice President Stephen Stuart, Treasurer Roger Strange and Secretary Kathleen Emonnd.“I look forward to the coming year,” and leading Kiwanis Club activities including the Citrus Festival, said Mensing, who joked that he attained the leadership position due to the culinary skills of his wife, Alice.
