Volunteer Hour Bars, scholarships awarded by SP Memorial Hospital Auxiliary

By Peggy Kelly Santa Paula TimesPauline Hair received a 3,500 Santa Paula Memorial Hospital Auxiliary Hour Bar, topping a long list of dedicated volunteers at the Auxiliary’s recent annual meeting.In addition, Auxiliary Scholarships were awarded to a record number of recipients during the lunch, held at Logsdon’s at the Santa Paula Airport.The Auxiliary is made up of Santa Clara River Valley residents who annually donate thousands of hours to the “Hospital on the Hill” that serves the communities of Santa Paula, Fillmore and Piru.Receiving 100 Hour Bars were LaVern Alburty, Deane Dekkers and Loretta Ferjo; a 200 Hour Bar was awarded to Nancy Castro; Madeline Ricards and Donna Zaelke earned 700 Hour Bars; reaching 1000 volunteer hours and receiving Bars were Bobbie Barker, Jody Caudillo - the Auxiliary’s new president - Edith Smith and Annette Subic; 1200 Hour Bars were presented to Alice Mensing, Maxine Spracklen and Angie Sheldon; 1,500 Hour Bars were earned by Dottie Armbruster, Lavonne Deeter, Evelyn Charlesworth and Jean Dempsey; Wanda Siegler was presented with a 2500 Hour Bar; and a 3000 Hour Bar was presented to Rica Villasenor.Scholarship Committee Chairwoman Jean Dempsey presented the $1,000 Scholarships to three R.N. candidates: the Beta Health Group again matched the Auxiliary Scholarships of $500 each this year.The Auxiliary’s annual Valentine’s Day Cookie Sale funded the first award, the Velma Mayhew Scholarship.
“Thanks to all the Auxiliary members and others for contributing those delicious sweets. And a special thank you for all the buyers who forgot their diets for that day to help us with that scholarship!” said Dempsey of the award given to Kim Lemmon of Ventura, due to graduate from the Moorpark College Nursing Program.The James W. Knight Memorial Scholarship, garnered from memorial donations in honor of the late longtime SPMH administrator, was awarded to Carmen Vasquez of Fillmore, a student in the Ventura College Nursing Program. Vasquez still has the puppet she received as a 5-year-old patient at SPMH, noted Dempsey.The Grace Thille Scholarship was awarded to Jessica Dedrick of Santa Paula, whose mother is a Maternity R.N. SPMH. Dempsey said Dedrick is a student in Moorpark College’s ADN program. “Jessica says that her mom knew she was going to be a nurse even before she was born, because Jessica would kick every time Mom put a woman on the fetal heart monitor!”Although the Auxiliary traditionally awards three scholarships, this year the “candidates were so outstanding that after interviewing the LVN applicants, Millie Korth (of the scholarship committee) and I decided that we really needed funds to award two more scholarships,” of $500 each.Santa Paula resident Dorothy Arrellano, who has two full-time jobs while attending Oxnard Adult School on a part-time basis received an LVN scholarship, as did Oscar Zavala, who was born at SPMH and also attends the Oxnard Adult School and presently works as a CNA, home health aide and phlebotomist.
