By Peggy Kelly Santa Paula TimesA sudden fire in a detached garage was knocked down before it could do much pre-holiday damage, according to a Santa Paula Fire Department official.According to SPFD Chief Paul Skeels, the report of a structure fire at 819 E. Virginia Terrace came in on Friday, Dec. 6, just after 3 p.m.“Although it was reported as a structure fire, upon arrival of firefighters it was found to be a fire burning in a detached garage,” located next to the hillside house. “The fire was pretty much out on arrival,” of two Santa Paula Fire engines and two Ventura County Fire Department engines called to the scene for mutual aid, said Chief Skeels. The resident of the home, Sammy Arellano, fought the fire in the detached garage with a garden hose, Chief Skeels added. Arellano was not injured during the incident.Firefighters remained on scene for about an hour for investigation and clean up after they confirmed that the fire was extinguished.
Chief Skeels said estimated damages to the property were $4,000. The contents of the garage sustained about $1,000 in damage.“The fire was confined to the garage and there was no real damage to the structure,” he added. The cause of the fire was found to be an electrical short in a garage wall outlet.
