By Peggy KellySanta Paula TimesA Santa Paula woman with a history of driving under the influence convictions was cited for losing control of her vehicle, hitting a utility pole and careening into a local park on June 16th.According to SPPD Commander Mark Hanson, 50-year-old Judy Escamilla was traveling eastbound on Harvard Boulevard at about 9:30 p.m. when the accident occurred.Escamilla “said she was driving down Harvard Boulevard and using her cell phone,” when she lost control of her 1988 Chevrolet Cavalier. The Cavalier struck a utility pole and the chain link fence at Teague Park, just west of Steckel Drive, before coming to a stop.Escamilla was “found to be under the influence,” of alcohol and was issued a citation for same while being treated for minor injuries at Santa Paula Memorial Hospital, noted Cmdr. Hanson. It was found that Escamilla was driving with a suspended license with alcohol terms; if the license had been current, Escamilla would have been required to use an interlock restriction device while operating the car.
Escamilla’s vehicle did not contain the device, a type of portable Breathalyzer that measures the alcoholic content of the driver and will not let a vehicle be operated if the driver is under the influence of alcohol.“Those devices are usually court ordered for those who have had multiple offenses. . .the driver has to blow into them every 15 minutes or so.”Escamilla was also cited for not having proof of insurance. Her vehicle received major damage and was towed from the scene, Cmdr. Hanson added.Another vehicle was damaged when it drove over debris at the scene.A court date for Escamilla to face the various charges has not yet been set.
