By Peggy KellySanta Paula TimesCommunity outreach to Santa Paula’s Spanish-speaking residents was a topic of discussion that led to a split City Council vote at the June 21st meeting.Such outreach efforts, among the council goals for the coming year, will be expanded, said Brian Yanez, community services director. The new public information and city directory will be bilingual and the Community Services Guide will include further description of programs in Spanish, said Yanez, as well as the city’s recycling calendar and customer service information that will be crafted as a door hanger or refrigerator magnet.Council meetings are being scheduled at Las Piedras Park, translation of council meetings will be provided through second audio programming and translators and a public information open house will feature Spanish speaking city employees.Spanish speaking service clubs will be offered presentations by city employees whose salary will be reviewed for skill pay enhancement.Yanez said that city utility bills - now only printed in English - would be translated into Spanish.
At this time fiscal or personnel impacts are not expected to carry a price tag, Yanez added.Councilman Ray Luna recommended Casa Del Mexicano as a council meeting venue and Mayor John Procter asked for assurances that the Second Audio Program - which translates the now televised council meetings into Spanish - was being funded.City Manager Wally Bobkiewicz noted that the council would be holding a meeting at Barbara Webster Elementary School on Sept. 29th.“There are some costs involved,” he noted but a “second council meeting in the coming year on the road,” could be arranged. The City Council voted yes on the outreach plan except for Councilman Rick Cook who cast the lone no vote.
