By Peggy KellySanta Paula TimesIf you regularly drive on Santa Barbara Street you’ve run the mill between pothole jumping to that shaky feeling of rubber tires over funky road overlay. Now, Santa Barbara Street - dubbed Pothole Alley by disgusted commuters - is being dug up for a major waterline project that upon completion will also provide a new, smooth drive.According to Public Works Director/City Engineer Cliff Finley, the Santa Barbara Street mainline replacement project is part of an ongoing waterline program to replace deteriorated two-inch and four-inch waterlines. The project will replace an existing 2-inch steel pipe along Santa Barbara Street from 7th to 9th streets with an 8-inch PVC pipe along with all domestic water services, fire hydrants, and valves.
The ambitious project also includes the installation of approximately 340-linear-feet of 16-inch PVC pipe as part of the city’s centralized water conditioning facility water transmission main. The main will be installed from Well 14 to the city’s main reservoir. The stretch of Santa Barbara Street being worked on gained notoriety for deep potholes and general decay, a condition hat prompted the City Council to make its repair a priority. The city did a quick fix until the waterline project - awarded to J & H General Contractors, Inc. - could be completed to prevent any excavation of newly paved streets, said Finley.Construction on the waterline project began on September 15th and is scheduled for completion by the end of October.“Arterial paving will follow,” said Finley. “We’ll chase right after it [the completion of the waterline] with the paving project.”
