Kiwanis Club installs David Luna as 2003-2004 President

The Kiwanis International Club of Santa Paula installed a new board of directors and President David Luna, who vowed to continue the club’s community support with a special focus on youth.

By Peggy KellySanta Paula TimesThe Kiwanis International Club of Santa Paula installed a new board of directors and President David Luna, who vowed to continue the club’s community support with a special focus on youth.The installation was held at the Bard Mansion at Port Hueneme on Nov. 14th. Special guests included Ventura County Transportation Commission Executive Director Ginger Gherardi.Outgoing District 42 Lt. Governor Orlene Bowers noted that “I get the fun part,” in detailing the Santa Paula Kiwanis’ community activism and accomplishments during the year. “I enjoy so much coming to your wonderful club!”The Santa Paula Kiwanis Club not only helped other clubs and organizations with their own projects, but donated funds and/or labor to a variety of events and programs, said Bowers.Holiday Snow on Main Street, Halloween Parade candy, Friends of the Library Book Sales, youth sports, Santa Paula Society of the Arts Exhibit, Santa Clara Valley Hospice/Home Support Group, student field trips, Grad Nite and their own annual Kiwanis Club Citrus Festival were just a few of the club supported activities.“Your club members gave 1,243 service hours,” during 2002, Bowers noted, and made $2,709 in donations.
Bowers said her duty was not to “de-install but retire,” several members of the board of directors, although “most are back and it’s been a job super-well done!”Luna noted that the club has worked with Bowers over the years and “it’s a pleasure and we thank you for being so supportive.”“David has been through this before,” said Incoming District 42 Lt. Governor Walter Metcalf, who outlined the duties for the coming year to the third-time club president.One priority is to “build this club no end, bring in new members for our club.”“One of my basic objectives is to build membership, our one and only objective; we need to thrive and survive for the Santa Paula community,” and each member should recruit another, said Luna. “With your support it will happen. . .”Immediate Past President Bill Mensing “served us well and we thank him,” Luna noted.Officers installed for 2003-2004 were: President David Luna, President Elect Mike Bush,1st Vice President Sheryl Misenhimer, Secretary Mary Mata, Treasurer Roger Strange, Immediate Past President Bill Mensing. The Board at Large is Peter Browne, Enrique Cornejo, Vic Glazener, Ken Stock, Bill Grant, Gene Marzec and Dan Robles.
