By Peggy KellySanta Paula TimesYou can guess what United Blood Services wants. . .your blood and the blood of all volunteers who will mirror the support the organization received from Santa Paula High School students.Rotarian Joe Jauregui said the club is thinking about sponsoring a blood drive and Patty Hunt of United Blood Services told club members that UBS drew 71-units at SPHS in recent weeks, the largest blood drive among all county schools.“I just want your blood,” Hunt noted with a grin.UBS supplies all blood to Ventura County hospitals and the need is great – an average of 116 donors each day - but UBS has been highly active in drives to keep up with the demand. But, “We get so busy in our everyday lives,” that donating blood is not often thought of, said Hunt. Also needed are potential bone marrow donors, she added.Only 5 percent of Americans donate blood, a figure mirrored in Ventura County. There are five locations ready to receive donors every day countywide including UBS traveling donation centers.
On Wednesday, June 30, there will be a blood donation drive at the Santa Paula Shopping Center near Vons, said Hunt. The drive will be from 3 to 7:30 p.m.Blood donors must be 17 years or older, weigh at least 110 pounds and show a photo ID for donation registration. Those experiencing cold or flu symptoms on the day of donation are asked not to participate as are those who have taken oral antibiotics in the last three days.Anyone who has had hepatitis after the age of 11 years or who have had contact with a person with clinical hepatitis with the past year are also asked not to donate. There are other health parameters that must be met to ensure that the donated blood is safe although all donations are tested. One out of every four hospital patients needs blood, Hunt noted. And, although UBS is a nonprofit, the “only thing we get for free is blood,” and expenses must be met to continue hospital supplies. “So, if you can’t donate blood, you can donate money,” to help ensure that blood will be available to any patient that needs it.For more information, call United Blood Services at 1-800-715-3699.
