One student from Ventura County was among the 90 4-H delegates from throughout the state who attended the California 4-H Citizenship Focus Conference held at the Holiday Inn Capitol Plaza in Sacramento June 25-29. Rosie Leidig, 16, of Santa Paula attended as the Ventura County delegate.During the five-day conference the delegates participated in political campaigns, elected constitutional officers, toured the California Supreme Court and the State Capitol, observed the Assembly and Senate floors “in action,” and met with their Senators and Assemblymembers. They also visited Old Sacramento, Sutter’s Fort, and the Governor’s mansion. The delegates participated in a wide range of activities designed to encourage them to become involved in issues and affairs, including a “legislative action simulation” discussing financial issues in California. They also participated in a mock trial. A highlight for Rosie was meeting with State Senator Tom McClintock and Assemblyman Tony Strickland.
California Focus is a citizenship study program for high school students, coordinated by the University of California’s State 4-H Office. According to Sandy Sathrum, conference director, delegates will work in their counties this next year implementing a local Plan of Action, which they developed and presented at the conference.Rosie’s mother, Cari Leidig, attended as chaperone and served as educational advisor in preparation for the conference. She is also serving as advisor as Rosie completes her community action plan.
