Representatives of the National Marrow Donor Program® (NMDP) Los Angeles Donor Center will be on hand to educate and register Santa Paula residents to the NMDP Registry of unrelated volunteer marrow and blood stem cell donors. The registration drive will be held on Sunday, October 17 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church, 435 N. Oak St., Santa Paula. Each year, thousands of patients worldwide face a frightening dilemma. They suffer from leukemia, aplastic anemia or other life-threatening blood diseases for which a marrow or blood stem cell transplant may offer the best hope for a cure. Patients who do not have a matching donor in their family turn to the NMDP for a matched unrelated donor. Our Lady of Guadalupe Church is calling on residents of Santa Paula to open their hearts and bring hope for the thousands of patients worldwide in need of donors for their transplants. Although there is a need for more Hispanic donors, all nationalities are invited to participate.
Volunteers must be between the ages of 18 to 60 and in good health. After completing a brief health questionnaire, volunteer donors give a small sample of blood and sign a consent form. For more information about becoming a marrow or stem cell donor, call the National Marrow Donor Program at (800) 246-7877.
