A new documentary film about protecting the quality of life in Ventura County will premiere Friday, September 17th at the Faulkner Farm in Santa Paula. Dulanie Ellis, Point of View Films, of Ojai, is the producer-director.“HOME GROW’N” was born out a passion to protect our world-class farmland from the encroaching auto malls and suburban sprawl. The public spoke when they voted for SOAR, but realizing that SOAR is just a temporary measure that runs out in 20-30 years, the filmmaker wanted to know what long-term solutions were possible. “HOME GROW’N” looks at reality-based solutions that are working nationwide under the mantle of Smart Growth – an approach to growing our communities in a way that provides truly affordable housing, eases traffic congestion and protects natural open spaces. As Ventura County voters get ready to state their will on issues like the Open Space District (Measure A) and the transportation tax (Measure B) this November, this film could not be more timely. A fast paced, image-rich filmmaking style offers the audiences a comprehensive look at our land-use choices. The exciting news is that we are at a point in time where we can do something positive, for very little money, to ensure the quality of life that we hold so dear for ourselves and for many generations to come. The premiere of “HOME GROW’N,” at the Hansen Agricultural Learning Center at Faulkner Farm on September 17th will begin at 7:30pm with a harvest theme. There will be an heirloom tomato taste testing event (with breads and cheeses, wine and beer, to cleanse the palette) and music from the Solar Mountain Boys. The film will be shown on the lawn, under the stars, at 8:30pm. The Ojai Winery and the Ojai Brew Pub are providing the refreshments; the heirloom tomatoes are compliments of the Beylik Family Farms and the Underwood Family Farms. The admission price is $15.
On Saturday, September 18th, the film will screen again at the Theater on High Street in Moorpark (at Hwy. 23 and High Street in Old Town). The theater has recently undergone a complete, luxurious renovation. The screening will be a benefit for the County Open Space Alliance (COSA) campaign for Measure A. Showtime is 4:30pm and there will be an opportunity to meet the filmmaker and have refreshments in the lobby afterwards.Ojai will screen the film on Saturday, September 25th, at the Ojai Playhouse at 4:30pm. This screening will also benefit the COSA campaign for Measure A. The admission for both Moorpark and Ojai will be $10.Other groups or organizations who wish to book a screening of the film should contact dulanie@sbcglobal.net.Ms. Ellis previously produced “MI CASA ES SU CASA” and “A PIECE OF THE PUZZLE” about the lack of farm worker housing and what is being done about that issue locally and statewide. Previous to that, she was Associate Producer with Tell The Truth Pictures whose most recent film, “MIGHTY TIMES – The Legacy of Rosa Parks” was nominated for an Academy Award.
