by Peggy KellySanta Paula TimesThe Santa Paula Rotary Club has always emphasized education through their scholarship program – last year the club awarded $9,000 to deserving SPUHS graduating seniors – but Rotarians know that without good teachers scholars would be hard to come by.The Rotary New Teachers barbecue afforded educators, including administrators, a warm welcome as well as a city tour completed before the dinner held at Limoneira Ranch park. Many of the teachers noted that they had never been the focus of such an event before; for those who had they said the Rotary welcome topped all others."They commented on being appreciated and feeling important," due to the interest shown by Rotarians and guests, said Rotary Past President Maria Bombara. The tour was a huge success, she added, noting that many of the teachers said that before they would just "get off the freeway, go to school," and then home.
Rotary offered a pre-barbecue tour that offered the teachers a good look at "our beautiful city," surrounded by mountain ranges, the views of the river valley, murals, historic downtown and area restaurants, said Bombara."One teacher was especially impressed because her tour guide was Police Chief Bob Gonzales," a tour arranged by Joe Jauregui.A party for teachers wouldn’t be a party without gift boxes – prepared by Rotarian Paul Romero – that included Santa Paula’s own avocados, lemons and oranges.Picnic tables held pumpkins, gourds and an assortment of corn, perfect for the event held at Limoneira Park.Santa Paula Elementary School Superintendent Luis Villegas andSanta Paula High School Superintendent David Gomez "did a tremendous job spreading the word," among new teachers and administrators, said Bombara.
