By Peggy KellySanta Paula TimesWith rising energy costs and Christmas right around the corner it’s time to take part in a unique program that is meant to save you money on your energy bills. “Energy Efficiency in Your Home: Comfort and Saving Money Can Go Hand-in-Hand” is the name of the free “Brown Bag” program sponsored by the Ventura County Energy Alliance. The program will have two noon sessions, on Monday, December 13 and Tuesday, December 14, at the Ventura County Energy Alliance Center, 1000 S. Hill Road, Suite 105, Ventura.According to VCEA Executive Director Cheryl Collart, the program will show participants where their home uses the most energy and how to save as much as 25 percent of energy costs, even as consumers make their homes more comfortable. Valuable programs to assist you in identifying and funding energy savings opportunities for your home will also be offered, as well as how to perform an energy “audit” for your home.Collart noted that the timing of the two “Brown Bag” meetings – meaning bring your lunch if you would like to eat during the informational session – were geared so that “attendees can choose a time that fits their schedule.” Described as a “highly informative and useful session” both program meetings will focus on a variety of residential energy uses, including holiday lighting and how to purchase energy-saving appliances.
An added bonus of replacing that power-sucking refrigerator or gas-wasting dryer is that many utility providers will pay you to pick up the working appliance to ensure that it will no longer be used, freeing up more power for others. Such energy savings programs also pay for themselves when consumers replace older model appliances with energy smart versions that can cover the cost of the new appliance in a matter of just a few years. The seminar is not only free to all participants, but each attendee will receive a complimentary compact fluorescent light bulb as well as other “energy goodies.” And with money-saving energy tips, participants can be assured of having more holiday shopping funds in the future.Registration is easy: call VCREA at 289-3335, or reply by e-mail to: cheryl.collart@mail.co.ventura.ca.us.The Ventura County Energy Resource Center is a new central clearinghouse for energy information in the Ventura County region. “We provide training and educational opportunities, library materials, on-line resources and essential tools that assist in understanding energy use,” Collart noted.
