The National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship and The Wellness Community have joined forces to improve the quality of cancer care through federal public policy change. As part of this effort, local residents can attend a free advocacy training workshop from 6:30-9 p.m. on March 10 at the Wellness Community Valley/Ventura office, located at 530 Hampshire Road in Westlake Village . Advocacy professionals from the National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship will lead the training session. “It’s time to change the way our current healthcare system looks at cancer,” says Suzanne Drace, president of The Wellness Community Valley/Ventura. “Together we can advocate for positive change on Capitol Hill and ensure that our loved ones are equipped to fight cancer.”The workshop will train participants on how to conduct letter-writing campaigns and meet with elected officials on such issues as FDA reform, the new prescription drug benefit under Medicare, cuts in payment for cancer care, palliative care and symptom management. A light dinner will be served. For reservations, call (805) 379-4777.
The Wellness Community Valley/Ventura is one of 22 chapters of the international non-profit organization whose mission is to help people with cancer and their loved ones enhance health and well being through professional programs of emotional support, education and hope. All programs and services are provided free of charge. Through participation in professionally led support groups, educational workshops and mind/body programs, people affected by cancer can learn vital skills to regain control, reduce feelings of isolation and restore hope - regardless of the stage of disease.
