Honorable Ken W. Riley Judge of the Year

The Hon. Ken W. Riley has been selected as the recipient of the 2005 Judge of the Year Award. This award is presented annually to a Ventura County judge at the Ventura County Trial Lawyers Association (VCTLA). Additionally, a portrait of the Hon. William L. Peck (Ret.) will be unveiled, and will later hang in Courtroom 22 of the Ventura County Superior Court. The VCTLA Judge of the Year dinner is scheduled for Tuesday evening, March 22 at the Residence Inn in Oxnard, beginning with a social hour at 6 p.m. and followed by dinner at 7 p.m. The ceremony will begin immediately after dinner.Judge Riley, a 1989 recipient of the award, was appointed to the Ventura County Municipal Court by Gov. George Deukmejian in 1988. He was later elected to the Superior Court in 1992.Judge Riley received his B.A. degree from Central State University in 1968 and his J.D. degree from Southwestern Law School in 1975. Prior to his appointment to the bench, he worked for the Ventura County District Attorney in a variety of capacities, including Senior Attorney, Special Assistant, Assistant Felony Supervisor, and Attorney for Ventura County Public Guardian’s Office.Judge Riley has been active in a number of community-based organizations, including the American Red Cross. His professional affiliations have included the California Judges Association, the Jerome H. Berenson Inn of Court, and the California Air National Guard. He is married to Ventura County Superior Court Judge Rebecca S. Riley.Kurt Kananen, VCTLA president, noted: “Judge Riley is a devoted and dedicated judge. His efforts over the years have improved the quality of the judicial system in our county.”
William L. Peck was a judge of the Ventura County Superior Court from 1980 through 1999, serving as the supervising judge of the civil department from 1993-1999. During the course of his judicial career, he held virtually every assignment at the court.Prior to his appointment to the bench, Judge Peck was a Deputy District Attorney from 1962-1965 and in private practice from 1965-1980 with the law firm of Loebl, Bringgold, Peck & Parker. Judge Peck received his B.A. from Carleton College and his LL.B from Boalt School of Law.
