A micro-earthquake struck early Sunday morning near - but not recorded on - two river valley area fault lines, according to the U.S. Geological Survey, Earthquake Hazards Program. The mini-quake registered 1.6 magnitude, and hit on July 6 just before 1:05 a.m.

The micro-earthquake was located four miles northwest of Santa Paula - 34.388N 119.120W - and was recorded at a depth of 19.1 miles. Although just below the San Cayetano Fault and above the Ventura Fault, Sunday’s mini-shaker was in an area with no known fault lines, although the U.S. Geological Survey noted that the location quality reported fell under the “Fair” category.

The San Cayetano Fault and its to the south neighbor Oak Ridge Fault transverse much of the Santa Clara River Valley respectively north and south of Santa Paula. At one point the two major faults, which for centuries have slowly been inching the Topa Topa and South Mountain ranges closer together, are separated by only about one mile.
