The Fourth of July was the cause for even more celebration when the annual Fireworks Spectacular lit up the sky above Santa Paula with a display that brought cheers and applause from happy spectators celebrating the nation’s Independence Day. Visible from many neighborhoods throughout Santa Paula the free, city-sponsored Fourth of July fireworks show was held at George Harding Park on East Harvard Boulevard, where visitors were encouraged to bring chairs and lawn blankets to relax and enjoy the display.

But many watched from their own front and back yards, kids and adults alike whooping at the fabulous show. “Wasn’t that wonderful?” exclaimed Rosie Del Rio, who watched the fireworks from her front yard. “Did you hear the people cheering and applauding?”

Cheering and applauding there was at the spectacular show, which many watchers said they believed was the best fireworks display ever. Vehicles full of spectators pulled into the Depot parking lot and other locations in the 10th and Santa Barbara streets area, where viewing was prime, and Hospital Hill below Santa Paula Hospital was jammed.

Although many watchers believed the fireworks were larger then in years past, City Manager Wally Bobkiewicz said he believed “Firing them off from a different angle” might have given the pyrotechnics a super-size effect. “I’m very pleased... it was a great show,” Bobkiewicz noted.

The effect on observers was obvious, especially for children who squealed with delight at each echoing explosion and the rain of sizzling lights. The traditional fireworks display represents the “bombs bursting in air” of the American Revolutionary War (1775-1783) against the British Empire, and celebrates the July 4, 1776 signing of the Declaration of Independence by the nation’s Founding Fathers.
