Santa Paula Airport Looking for Old Photographs

May 01, 2013
Santa Paula News

The two photographs (above) show the Santa Paula Airport at its beginning in 1930 and a recent 2013 photo shows how the airport has evolved over the years.

To record its, history a book is being produced by the airport to celebrate its 85th anniversary in 2015. They are looking for any photographs that you might have hidden away in boxes or old albums.

Craig Mailloux, a retired photojournalist and picture editor, is leading the search for photos and has already collected hundreds. But, they are looking for photographs of several specific things:

* Photos of the old airport café, before Logsdon’s  restaurant was built.

* Photos on the airport from WWII when it was shut down and the planes moved away.

* Photos from the 1930s through the 1950s of airport scenes and people.

* Photos of celebrities at the airport.

* Floods in 1969  where the planes were moved into town.

Also working on the book are illustrator Wendell Dowling, historian Janice Dickenson, author and historian Mitch Stone, and editor Marion Nauman. Writers Peggy Kelly and Marianne Ratcliff are contributing stories.

If you have photos that might work, there are two ways to contact them. You can reach the team at the airport email address and let them know what you have - email address: szpairport@verizon.net. On the First Sunday at the Airport on May 5th,  from 10am until 3pm, you can drop by the hangar at 37 Curtiss Taxi and bring your prints, slides, or negatives and they can be scanned in and originals returned to you immediately.
