By Peggy Kelly Santa Paula Times A Santa Paula man who entered a gated community Saturday morning with a large Shillelagh-a traditional carved Irish cane topped with a knob or a pistol grip-was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon in connection with a disturbance call on the west side of the city.

Santa Paula Police Sgt. Scott Varner said Officers responded March 22 at about 11:45 a.m. to Hillview Estates, 975 W. Telegraph Road regarding a man “armed with a large stick, found to be a Shillelagh Irish stick, indicating people were trying to kill him.”

Varner said “A separate reporting party called moments later indicating the subject entered her residence, was breaking windows, and asking her for firearms.

“Moments later the subject was contacted by a Santa Paula Police Officer,” and the suspect, Esiguio Robledo, 50, entered the Officer’s vehicle “and was speaking illogically... due to the subject being in possession of a weapon and in close proximity,” to the weapons in the patrol vehicle, Varner said Robledo was tased.

“The initial tasing was ineffective and the subject made his way towards a group of bystanders in the area,” and concerned for their safety and that of the Officer, the subject was subsequently tased a second time.

He was taken into custody without further incident.

Varner said additional Officers arrived on scene as well as Santa Paula Fire EMTs who checked Robledo before he was transported to Santa Paula Hospital, standard for incidents involving tasing.

In addition, “It looked like he had received injuries prior to our contact with him... anytime someone is tased it’s our normal policy to have the EMTs respond, then we take the subject to the hospital for medical clearance.

“But he was going anyway,” as Robledo said Varner, “had several lacerations to his hands. We’re not sure at what point he received the lacerations. The reporting party said he already had blood on him,” when he was encountered at the complex.

“We assume he got the lacerations when he was breaking out windows,” but Varner said it is unknown exactly how Robledo received the injuries.

Robledo lives outside city limits north of Hillview Estates: “Nobody knows how he got into a gated community,” said Varner, “but he was there... “

The incident could have ended in tragedy.

“It caused us some concern... we were hoping he did not have any weapons,” other than the Shillelagh, and Varner said, “Fortunately he had gotten out of the house when initially contacted,” by the first Officer that arrived on scene.

Robledo was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon against a peace officer and possession of a prohibited weapon. He was also arrested in connection with suspicion of burglary, vandalism and resisting, obstructing or delaying a peace officer.
