Fourteen Santa Paula High School seniors completed the necessary work to graduate in summer school and received their diplomas in a special ceremony Friday in the SPHS Auditorium.

The ceremony, held before family and friends, was a scaled down version of the June graduation, complete with cap and gowns, a student speech and an address from the Summer School principal.

Sierra De Anda told the gathering that, although there was a little voice in the back of their heads telling them to give up, “But we never listened to that voice, we persevered.”

Summer School Principal Dr. George Williams shared a vocabulary word with the graduates, perseverance. He said, “Perseverance means a steady persistence in a course of action, especially in spite of difficulties, obstacles or discouragement.” He noted that some of the students finished their last finals just hours before the graduation ceremony. “But they made it here through steady persistence and perseverance.

Dr. Williams said all of the students are unique individuals. “There’s never been anybody exactly like you and there will never be anybody exactly like you again,” he added

He noted that this class will retire somewhere between 2065 and 2070. “There’s no way that we could prepare you for what you need to know in the year 2065,” he added. “I think it would be fair to say about the year 2020 and that’s only six years away. This is called a commencement ceremony and commencement means beginning and that’s really what it is, you leave here and it’s a new beginning for you and you’re going to discover that you have abilities and talents for things that haven’t been invented and haven’t been thought of or haven’t been discovered.”

Antonio Gaitan, Director of Educational Services accepted the graduating class on behalf of the district. He told the students, “I commend you and you’re parents for the extra step, the commitment, the time you made to complete your requirements.”

The graduates are: Aileen Castillo, Miguel Contreras, Sierra De Anda, Brittanie Franco, Adleline Hernandez, Juan Lopez, Christian Magana, Ramon Marron, Salvador Mendoza, Jared Patton, Jose E. Perez, Crystal Quintana and Andres Vaiz.
