U.S. Navy Captain Paul D. Halpin 

U.S. Navy Captain Paul D. Halpin, 93, was born October 9, 1920 in Pittsburgh, PA.

Paul came to Van Nuys, CA in November 1920 at the age of 5 months via train with his parents and brother Richard. Paul grew up in the San Fernando Valley and attended grammar school in Van Nuys and North Hollywood High School, graduating in the winter class of 1938.

Paul studied at UCLA for 2 1/2 years where he was enrolled in the Naval R.O.T.C. program. Out of UCLA Paul entered the U.S. Navy in 1938 as an Air Cadet and served for 26 years as a pilot, mainly in R5-D Naval Air Transport planes. He flew in many parts of the world including South America and Europe, having transported several dignitaries including the Secretary of the Navy.

During the Korean War, Paul served as Air Operations Officer on the carrier Boyer. Following the Korean War he became commanding officer of Rota Naval Air Station in Cadiz, Spain. Paul flew several sorties across the Mediterranean in A30 “Sky Warrior” jets.

After retirement from the Navy as a Captain in 1966 Paul returned to Houston, Texas and became employed as a private pilot for a wealthy businessman in Houston and made many flights to Kentucky, where Mr. Allbritton owned a stable of race horses and a very nice passenger jet plane.

About 12 years ago Paul moved to Boulder City, Nevada with his close friend Betty Lynch, where they lived in separate apartments.

Paul is survived by his only son John Patrick of Austin, Texas, his brother Richard (wife Hilda) of Santa Paula, CA and two cousins, Peter De Muth and Joan Healy, Orange County, CA.

Paul was cremated by order of his son and no memorial has been scheduled.
