Horrified to horror: Haunted House to
help make up lost Pumpkin Patch funds

When Santa Paula Rotary learned it would not be able to stage its annual Faulkner Farm Pumpkin Patch members were horrified, but they turned to horror to raise funds for the community.

The Hallock House of Horrors will open in October, the club’s attempt to make up for some of the almost $100,000 a year it raised - and in turn donated to a variety of community programs, activities and charities - annually through the now defunct Pumpkin Patch.

Rotarians operated the Pumpkin Patch for seven years before a dispute with Faulkner Farm property owner UC Hansen Agricultural Research and Extension Center squashed the event, which each year drew more than 22,000 visitors.

“We have to continue to raise money,” to give to dozens of other nonprofits said Ginger Gherardi, who was heavily involved in the Pumpkin Patch over the years.

Rotarians decided that the Halloween theme was too good to pass up, hence the Hallock House of Horrors.

The haunted house, actually the former automobile dealership at the intersection of Highway 126 and South Hallock Road, will be open Friday, Saturday and Sunday, October 17-18-19 and October 24-25-26. Hours will be 5 p.m. to midnight Friday and Saturdays and 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. Sundays.

Event Chairman Carlos Juarez and other Rotarians have been scaring up meetings and excursions to come up with ideas, props, sound effects and other plans to transform the former dealership, which offers plenty of room for unforgettable thrills and chills - and the perfect acoustics for unrestrained screaming - into a House of Horrors.

The Hallock House of Horrors is not recommended for young children; tickets will be $10 each.

Juarez is being tightlipped about the offerings inside the Hallock House of Horror but promised an array of scary experiences: “We don’t want to spoil the surprises,” and still any shrieking, “so I’ll just say we’re considering some classic horror stories and scenes... with surprises!”

Juarez, who is involved in the annual Santa Paula GhostWalk as a story writer, set designer, prop builder and lighting and sound designer, and his helpers will turn the interior of the former automobile dealership into a full blown horror production.

“People, especially teenagers, love haunted houses, and,” said Juarez, “we’ll give them a real supernatural experience at our Hallock House of Horror... and raise money for the community at the same time. We promise a ghoulishly good time will be had by all!”
