Jacob Escobedo: Santa Paula gang
member shot one week, arrested the next
Published:  October 08, 2014

A Santa Paula gang member with an extensive criminal history and a habit of barricading himself when faced with arrest was taken into custody early Friday, one week after he was the victim of a Ventura shooting.

According to a Ventura Police spokesman, the department received a 911 call October 3 about 12:30 a.m. reporting that suspicious people were loitering in the 1200 block of Prairie Lane.

The caller was concerned about the gathering because just one week before, September 26, there had been a shooting in the same area that occurred at about 3 a.m. When Ventura Police arrived on the scene they found evidence of a shooting but all the people reported to be involved in the incident were gone.

A short time later St. John’s Regional Medical Center in Oxnard reported they were treating Jacob Escobedo, 28, of Santa Paula for a gunshot wound. Escobedo underwent surgery for his injury and left the hospital on an unknown date.

Police had been searching for Escobedo, who was now wanted for violating his post-release offender status.

On Friday, when VPD units responded to the 1200 block of Prairie Lane the subjects reported as suspicious had left the area, but a nearby resident flagged down officers and told them Escobedo was inside a nearby home and possibly armed with a handgun.

As police approached the residence they observed a man matching the heavily tattooed Escobedo’s description walking around in the area, but when officers attempted to contact him he fled back inside the home. Officers set up a perimeter and made multiple announcements to Escobedo to come out, which he did about 40 minutes later.

Escobedo was arrested in connection with a felony warrant and on suspicion of obstructing a police officer. A search of the home was conducted but a gun was not located.

Escobedo was transported to Ventura County Medical Center for undisclosed treatment of his previous gunshot wound and once medically cleared was taken to county jail and booked on a no bail felony warrant.

Ventura Police noted that Escobedo, who over the years has been involved in numerous standoffs with Santa Paula Police, is in the Post Release Offender Supervision (PROS) program.
