The Isbell Middle School Band has been awarded a grant to purchase much-needed band instruments from the Mr. Holland’s Opus Foundation.

The surprise announcement was made in the band room Tuesday as band teacher Scott Kneff was working with a class. Thanking the foundation Kneff said, “Thank you very much for the instrument donation! My students will be very happy and will benefit for many years to come.”

The Foundation keeps music alive in schools by donating musical instruments to under-funded music programs, giving youngsters the many benefits of music education, helping them to be better students and inspiring creativity and expression through playing music.

According to their web site, “We believe that kids thrive when given the chance to learn and play music. Putting an instrument into their hands improves the quality of their education and their lives. The window is brief and all kids deserve a chance to play music in school!”

The Mr. Holland’s Opus Foundation was established in 1996 by Michael Kamen, the composer for the motion picture Mr. Holland’s Opus.

Isbell Middle School will receive: 2 alto saxophones, 2 tenor saxophones, 2 trombones, 1 flute, 1 clarinet, 1 double french horn, 1 sousaphone, 1 refurbished flute, 1 refurbished clarinet. The total retail value of this donation is $18,095.
