Melvin Alfred “Ozzie” Osborn

     (1920 - 2014)

Ozzie Osborn born September 6, 1920 passed away peacefully on December 14, 2014 at Santa Paula Hospital.

Born to Claude and Blanche Osborn, Ozzie was raised in Carthage, Missouri where he was a school boy and helped take care of his 9 siblings. The family moved to Fowler, CA in 1937. He later joined the US Navy in 1939 where he served as a machinist during World War II on the U.S.S Dent. Oz continued his service in the Navy with tours in the Philippines, Washington DC, French Morocco, and Japan. Finally, settling in Port Hueneme where he retired as a Chief Warrant Officer in 1961. 

A Ventura County resident for over 50 years, Ozzie was a local business owner, a contractor, and entrepreneur. He had antique and plumbing shops in Oxnard and Santa Paula and was a professionally trained auctioneer working for local auction houses, as well as holding his own for many years. An involved citizen, he was a member of the Rotary and ran for city council in Port Hueneme. Though his accomplishments are varied and too numerous to list, he is best known for simply being “Ozzie Osborn” The man who could make a deal.

A remarkable individual, Ozzie embodied the concept of a creative genius. With his unfailing work ethic, enthusiasm and need to create, he and his family gave new life to old buildings, built a boom town from scratch and even cleared a land fill to create his well know golf course, Ozzie Osborn’s Par Three in Santa Paula. He was a family man, a skilled landscape artist, a crooner, a builder and a lover of all animals, especially his dogs. 

He and his wife Rhonda celebrated their 69th wedding anniversary on August 25th of this year and were business partners and constant companions. Ozzie is survived by his wife, his two sons Rod and Marty Osborn, his granddaughters; Kari Osborn-McPherson (Husband Shayne) Kamme Osborn-Ferguson (Husband Alex), Jennifer Hawkins (Husband Darren) and Nadia Chapman (Husband Mike). His great grandchildren; Ashley McPherson, Riley and Harrison Hawkins, Darby Ferguson and his great great-grandson Liam McPherson. His sisters Virgina Carroll, Gloria Williams and his brothers Jim and Homer Osborn.

A celebration of life will be held for family and friends will take place at 2:00pm on Saturday, December 27, 2014 at residence of  Rod Osborn located at 13675 1/2 Ojai Road Santa Paula, CA 93060.

“We Build, we fight”-US Navy Sea Bees motto. No one can sum up 94 years in a few words, but these words ring most true. Ozzie Osborn did build and he did fight, for his country, his family and his amazing life.
