The staff of Santa Paula High School announced the Top 40 Accelerated Readers for the 2014-15 fall semester school year. The Accelerated Reader is a computer-managed reading program where students are awarded points based on the number of comprehension quizzes they pass after reading books. The value of the books are determined by their length and difficulty. 

The number one reader at Santa Paula High School for the fall semester is Nicole Mayes, a junior, with 181.1 points. She became an avid reader when her fourth grade teacher encouraged her to compete in the Accelerated Reader program. Nicole remarked: “Reading has really helped increase my vocabulary and writing skills. Being exposed to more words has helped me in all subjects.”

Crystal Mendez earned the number two reader position with 148.5 points, followed closely by Mireille Vargas (116 pts.), Daisy Zuñiga (108.2 pts.), Roxxann Eckert (104.1 pts.), and Isabel Mondragon (102 pts.).

“To earn more than a hundred points over the course of only one semester is a considerable feat,” said Nora Perez, Library/Textbook Technician at Santa Paula High School.

Additional students who earned spots in the Top 40 are: Leslie Mex (92.8 pts.), Marisol Ramos (91.4 pts.), Johanna Contreras (89.2 pts.), Ericka Magaña (83.9 pts.), Mayra Ruiz (81.6 pts.), Viviana Avelar (81.4 pts.), Syndi Santiago (80.7 pts.), Lizette Gonzalez (80.4 pts.), Brianna Seward (75.8 pts.), Bethaney Valenzuela (73.1 pts.), and Nels Anderson (73 pts.).  In addition to these scholars, Lauren Garcia (67.8 pts.), Sebastian Garcia (65.6 pts.), Sofia Fernandez (64.4 pts.), Viki Lemus (64.1 pts.), Roxanne Martinez (62.6 pts.), Lauren Alamillo (62.5 pts.), Julian Garcia (61.4 pts.), Alondra Navarro (60.1 pts.), Rebecca Camarillo (59.3 pts.) and Cristal Hernandez (58.7 pts.) achieved reading excellence. 

Additionally, Abdealy Vazquez (57.4 pts.), David Ordonez (57.1 pts.), Jorge Montelongo (56.2 pts.), Crispina Uribe (54.2 pts.), Emmanuel Baez (54 pts.), Lizbeth Vasquez (52.3 pts.), Ashley Valdovinos (52.2 pts.), Estefany Mendoza (52.1 pts.), Alex Castillo (49 pts.), Genessis Rojas (49 pts.), Carlos A. Gomez (48.7 pts.), Vanessa Bazan (48.3 pts.), Daisy Candelas (48.3 pts.), and Jocelyn Garcia (48.3 pts.) rounded off the list of the Top 40.

“I am extremely proud of our students who made an effort to become proficient readers and who will, as a result, be more successful on the job or in college,” said Kelley Payne, an English teacher at Santa Paula High School.
