Alfonso Martinez Favila

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, brother, uncle, grandfather and friend, Alfonso M. Favila who died on March 1, 2015 due to a brief illness.  Alfonso was born on October 15, 1929 in Simon, Durango, Mexico to Melecio and Maria del Refugio Martinez Favila.  He was the youngest of eight children. After growing up on a ranch and working to maintain the farm at a young age, he immigrated to the United States as an adult and upon his arrival, briefly worked in agriculture while making Santa Paula his home for 61 years.

Alfonso was employed for 30 years at General Motors as an auto painter. After his retirement at the age of 55, Alfonso spent his time enjoying his family, traveling, and gardening. While raising his family in Santa Paula, he loved the outdoors and especially enjoyed warm days picnicking at Steckel Park and walking up the river with his children. He was an animal lover, enjoyed watching birds and taking long walks. He also found many opportunities to help others in need including neighbors, family members, friends and strangers. He was an avid diver… “Believe it or not” as he would end every tall tale.

Alfonso’s quiet strength has been an anchor for his family and, although not tall by human measure, he towered in integrity in the eyes of others.  He delighted in living his life to the fullest with laughter, simplicity, and love.

Alfonso is survived and will be dearly missed by his wife of 54 years, Ruth Favila; son Rene Favila; daughters Sandy Seekins (David Seekins), Norma Beatriz Favila,  and Marisela Favila (Angel De La Trinidad); sister Tita Vargas (sons:Roberto, Marcos, Arturo); grandchildren: Tirzah Porras, Olmo, Omar and Emilio Uribe,  Iliana and Cesar Alfonso De La Trinidad, and Ryon Seekins. He was preceded in death by his son, Alfonso Favila, Jr.

A viewing will be held at Skillin-Carroll Mortuary, 738 E. Santa Paula Street, Santa Paula on Thursday, March 5, 2015 from 5 – 9 p.m.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be presided over by Father Charles Lueras C.R.I.C. on Friday, March 6, 2015 at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church, 427 Oak Street, Santa Paula at 10 a.m.  Interment will follow immediately after the mass.

“The purpose of life is not to be happy.  It is to be useful, to be honorable, to be compassionate, to have it make some difference that you have lived and lived well.”  Dad, thank you for making a difference in our lives and the lives of others.
