SP crews respond to stop water
gusher from sheared off fire hydrant
Published:  April 17, 2015

Although always an aggravation, a sheared off fire hydrant can be a tragedy in a drought.

And Tuesday Santa Paula Fire and Public Works Water Division personnel worked to shut off the water at the intersection of Harvard Boulevard and Olive Street after the incident that occurred at approximately 2 p.m.

A Recology Co. roll off truck reportedly was making a turn when it clipped the fire hydrant shearing it off and creating the waterspout that flooded a portion of the intersection and impeded westbound Harvard Boulevard traffic. Olive Street was closed briefly at East Harvard during the incident.

Santa Paula Fire Captain John Harber said no one was hurt in the accident.

Damages were confined to the fire hydrant and Harber said, “The water flowed for about 20 minutes,” before it could be shut off.

Harber said the city’s Public Works Water Division will calculate the water loss from the sheared off hydrant.
