There wasn’t anything you
couldn’t do at Friday’s Cruise Nite

It seemed like there wasn’t anything you couldn’t do at Friday’s Cruise Nite from speaking to the owners of the cool cars lining Main Street to getting a free water-saving showerhead…even learning how to save a life.

Historic Downtown Santa Paula was the place to be for the May Cruise Nite where a crowd enjoyed music by the Lucky Sons band, was able to purchase a special Cruise Nite T-shirt, get a bite to eat or a snack at the numerous restaurants or just wander around and talk to friends or meet new people.

Cruise Nite cars — all pre-1975 — ran the gamut from muscle cars such as a candy apple red GTO to a 1970 MGB painted traditional racing green.

Mike Gustafson of Ventura said he has owned the MGB for more than five years, a vehicle he took about nine months to restore to showroom condition.

That includes a new engine now with about 10,000 miles; Gustafson like many who own British cars, is well acquainted with what is under the hood.

But not so much with what is underneath the car.

“I have to find someone to align it,” he noted with a laugh.

Gustafson has attended Cruise Nite for several years and he recently showed off his MGB at a Santa Paula Airport First Sunday where he made an appearance with members of the Central Coast British Car Club, a featured attraction.

The undeniably British MGB certainly looked comfortable parked in the “Colonies” of Cruise Nite, an event that Gustafson said he especially enjoys.

Why? “It’s low-key,” noted Gustafson and, “You don’t have to pay

to enter.”

Also free were the adjustable flow showerheads being given away by Rob Howard and Caesar Hernandez of the City of Santa Paula Public Works Department.

“We’ve given out close to 50,” said Howard who noted the pair was also distributing a flyer on describing the outdoor water schedule and water prohibitions due to the drought and tightened state mandates.

Also free was the Hands-Only CPR being taught by Santa Paula Firefighters at the corner of Main and Mill streets where people lined up for the two-minute instruction.

Ezra Ramirez was the lucky winner when his name was drawn for the La Cabana Restaurant dinner for two gift certificate. Hernandez won the tasty prize in the drawing that each person who took the Hands-Only CPR training — 73 people at Friday’s Cruise Nite — were eligible to enter.

The Santa Paula Fire Department teams up with Southern California Edison to provide the free training that even children can learn.

Main Street restaurants also got into the Cruise Nite mood offering specials as well as additional musical entertainment inside their eateries.

Cruise Nite said Barbara Kroon of Santa Paula, on her way to meet friends at a Main Street eatery, “Is really the best!”

Now in its 17th season, Cruise Nite is sponsored by the Santa Paula Police Officers Association and the Chamber of Commerce; Dave Anderson of Fillmore and Henry Aguilar of Santa Paula, both retired from the SPPD, coordinate the monthly event. Cruise Nite season runs from April through October.
