Two Oxnard gang members were arrested on various charges late on the 4th of July when they allegedly fired off a shotgun in Santa Paula.

According to Santa Paula Police Sgt. Ken Clark, officers were dispatched Saturday at about 11:50 p.m. to the area of Palm Avenue and Harvard Boulevard where two men — one carrying a shotgun — were reported to be walking north on Palm Avenue.

“It was also reported that the subject with the shotgun had fired shots into the air,” and Clark said upon checking the area and speaking with witnesses officers found two men matching the description, “in front of a gas station in the area…”

One of the men, later identified as Aflonzo Islas, 21, of Oxnard, was found to be in possession of a loaded shotgun that he had tried to conceal in his pants.

Clark said the second man, 19-year-old Jose Viveros, also of Oxnard, was found to be in possession of evidence connecting him to the shots fired incident.

“Both subjects,” said Clark, “were found to be gang members,” of an Oxnard gang.

Islas and Viveros were arrested without incident.

Leading up to the incident, SPPD Commander Ish Cordero said “The two had been partying somewhere in the apartments back in that area and they apparently fired the shots as they came from Larmon Loop,” off the 100 block of Santa Ana Street.

The weapon was fired “probably as they were coming from the apartments in the area…and more than likely that’s when they decided to do their own fireworks.”

Islas was charged with several weapons-related offenses, as well as participating in a criminal street gang, willful negligent discharge of a firearm, possession of a concealed weapon, carrying a loaded firearm in public and possessing a firearm while on probation.

Viveros was charged with participating in a criminal street gang, willful negligent discharge of a firearm and conspiracy to commit a crime.

Both were transported to Ventura County Jail.
